DNA and Adoption
An adoption in the family tree does not have to mean a dead-end in the research. There are specific strategies and methods for finding information about an adoption using DNA and traditional paper research. Authentic Origins LLC has many years of expertise in this area and will assist in providing strategies and recommendations for individual situations. Each situation is treated confidentially and professionally.
Because many adoption records are sealed, DNA has become a viable strategy for adoptees to locate their birth parents.
DNA doesn't lie! But it is important that DNA results are interpreted appropriately. It is also important that adoptees (and others) consider what they might find with DNA testing and examine their expectations. As an adoptee and former social worker, Sandy can assist in this process as well as with analysis of DNA results and matches. The client/adoptee is kept informed about the results and next steps will be discussed. Contact between members of the adoption triad is left up to the persons involved but coaching can be provided to optimize the response.
There is some information that can be found using traditional paper research as well depending upon the time period and location. For an overview of the history of adoption in Minnesota and procedures for obtaining records, the following articles are posted here with permission from the Minnesota Genealogical Society. The articles were originally published in Minnesota Genealogist, Vol. 41, No. 1 (Spring 2010) and Vol. 43, No. 1 (Spring 2012).
